When to use an EXIF metadata reader

This tool reads the hidden EXIF metadata in a photo — camera, lens, shot date, GPS coordinates — directly in your browser, without uploading the image to a server.

When to use it

• You want to check when and with what device a photo was taken, for example for technical or archival reasons.
• You need to check whether a photo contains GPS data before publishing it online, for privacy reasons.

When NOT to use it

• You need to remove EXIF metadata, not just view it: this tool is a reader, not an editor. You need a dedicated removal tool for that.
• The photo has already been edited or exported by software that strips metadata (e.g. some social networks): in that case the EXIF data may no longer be present.

Alternatives

• Photo editing software (Lightroom, GIMP) to view and also edit/remove metadata.
• Batch anonymization tools to strip metadata from many photos at once before publishing.

Common mistakes

• Assuming every photo has complete EXIF metadata: many platforms (WhatsApp, social networks) strip it automatically during upload.
• Publishing photos with visible GPS data without realizing it reveals the exact shooting location.
• Confusing the shot date with the file's modification date: EXIF metadata reports the original shot date, which can differ from the file's date on your device.
